Sant Joan Festivals in Menorca: the magical beginning of summer

A living tradition that transforms Ciutadella

Every June, Menorca dresses in emotion, history, and culture for the Sant Joan Festivals. More than just a celebration, it is a spectacle that engages all the senses and marks the kickoff of the Menorcan summer. Ciutadella becomes the epicenter of this unforgettable experience: Menorcan horses rearing in the air, riders dressed in gala attire, traditional music that gives you goosebumps, and an atmosphere unlike any other.

The festivals, held on June 23rd and 24th, have centuries of history. What began as a religious pilgrimage in the 14th century is today an explosion of emotions blending solemnity and joy. It all starts with the Diumenge des Be, a procession with a live lamb walking through the streets, announcing the start of the fiesta. Then comes the Primer Toc, the exact moment when everything gets underway. From then on, Ciutadella transforms: horses and riders parade among the crowd, the music of the jaleo echoes in every corner, and the squares fill with applause and emotion.

The jaleo, the games, and the thrill of experiencing it

The main event of the festivals is the Jaleo, where horses rear up on their hind legs amidst the crowd to the rhythm of the band. Adrenaline mixes with devotion and respect, and the public becomes an active part of the celebration. Seeing the caixers and cavallers guide their mounts through the people is something you will never forget.

In addition to the jaleo, the Jocs des Pla take place on the 24th, medieval equestrian games combining speed, skill, and tradition. Watching the riders gallop to pierce rings or break shields right in the middle of a natural arena is an authentic Menorcan experience.

An event you cannot miss

The Sant Joan Festivals are not just another activity: they are the soul of Menorca in its purest state. Participating as a spectator is a unique opportunity to immerse yourself in local culture and understand why these celebrations are so deeply rooted in the hearts of the Menorcans.

If you are lucky enough to be in Menorca on those dates, don’t think twice. Soak in the atmosphere, listen to the fabiol, try a nice cold “gin amb llimonada”, and let yourself be carried away by an experience that goes far beyond tourism: a deep dive into the soul of the island.
