King’s Island in Mahón: History and Art in the Heart of the Port
An island that has it all: culture, memory, and natural beauty
Menorca is full of moving corners, but few combine as much living history, contemporary art, and scenic beauty as King’s Island, located in the middle of the port of Mahón, one of the largest natural harbors in the Mediterranean. It is only accessible by boat, which already makes the visit something special. A short boat ride transports you to centuries of history, tranquil gardens, and surprising artistic spaces.
A historical legacy restored with love
King’s Island was a strategic point for centuries. Its name comes from the arrival of King Alfonso III in 1287, but its strongest footprint was left by the 18th-century military hospital, built by the British and used for more than 200 years. Today, that hospital has been carefully restored by a group of volunteers, bringing it back to life stone by stone. Walking through its rooms is like leafing through an open book of Menorca’s naval and medical history.
Furthermore, in the same enclave, remains of a 6th-century early Christian basilica are preserved, with ancient mosaics that remind us of the spiritual importance of the place for over a thousand years.

Contemporary art in a unique setting
Since 2021, the international gallery Hauser & Wirth has transformed part of the island into a top-tier contemporary art space. The proposal coexists harmoniously with the surroundings: respectful architecture, gardens designed by Piet Oudolf, and exhibitions that change every season. Here art is breathed, walked through, and contemplated facing the sea.
A visit for all the senses
The King’s Island is not just a museum or an outdoor stroll. It is a complete experience:

All of this in a quiet, careful, unhurried environment. One of those places that leave a mark.
